PUBG (Players Unknown’s Battlegrounds) is a highly popular online multiplayer video game that has taken the global gaming community since its release in 2017 developed by Brendan Greene. The game features a “battle royale” format, where 100 players parachute onto an island and fight until only one remains and also there are many modes small maps, arcade etc. PUBG being a globally popular videogame connecting millions of people worldwide shows its significance in modern digital entertainment. It has regular updates, more events which make it more entertaining and habitual to players.

With the passage of time, globally it started more famous because a lot of players record game plays do live streaming and upload on social media such as YouTube etc. Gradually people started playing PUBG specifically in Pakistan where every young started playing and make it source of income through participating in esports, tournaments and live streaming on YouTube. With its success, PUBG has become more than just a form of entertainment it has influenced social interactions, community building, and even the nature of online gaming itself.

In the context of Islamic teachings, in which playing digital games like PUBG are permissible or not present many discussions, particularly around issues like addiction, violence, and their impact on personal and social ethics. The gaming world, as it intersects with modern Islamic values, raises questions about permissibility, ethical implications, and the balancing of religious principles with contemporary leisure activities. This research covers the status of PUBG in Islam, analyzing its potential harms and benefits from an Islamic perspective and offering insights into how Muslims can navigate the digital gaming world in accordance with Islamic values.

PUBG Mobile Controversy and Religious Concerns

In June 2020, PUBG Mobile introduced a “New Jungle Adventure Mode” featuring an event in the Sanhok map where players interacted with a temple, bowed to idols, and received in-game rewards. This prompted a fatwa from Jamia Alum Banuri Town on August 5, 2020, declaring such actions shirk (polytheism) and stating that players performing these virtual acts risked exclusion from Islam. The fatwa emphasized that even symbolic gestures toward idols, regardless of intent, could invalidate one’s faith and marriage. PUBG Mobile developers swiftly removed the event to respect religious sensitivities.

Later, Mufti Zubair (October 2020) criticized PUBG for promoting addiction, wasting time, and harming mental health, though he clarified that post-update gameplay was not inherently haram. A tragic incident in Lahore (April 2021) highlighted real-world risks when a PUBG addict allegedly recreated game violence, killing three family members. Critics in Pakistan condemned the game’s violent mechanics, linking them to desensitization and neglect of responsibilities.

Scholarly Debates on Gaming Permissibility in Islam

Islamic scholars remain divided on gaming. Some, like Dr. Zaid Alsalami (2020), argue that digital games can be halal if played responsibly, providing relaxation and social bonding without neglecting religious duties or causing harm. This moderate view stresses moderation, ethical content, and balance with spiritual and worldly obligations. Conversely, stricter scholars condemn games like PUBG for normalizing violence or idolatry, even indirectly. The debate hinges on intent, content, and consequences: while some see gaming as a neutral tool, others warn against moral and spiritual corruption.

Grand Theft Auto (GTA) and Explicit Content

GTA is widely deemed haram due to its explicit violation of Islamic principles. The game glorifies theft, murder, prostitution, drug use, and sexual themes, directly opposing Islamic teachings on morality, peace, and respect for life. Its desensitizing portrayal of violence and lack of consequences conflict with Islamic values.

Additionally, explicit content (nudity, profanity) risks corrupting players’ moral integrity. The addictive open-world design is criticized for encouraging neglect of prayers, family, and work, undermining the balanced lifestyle Islam promotes. Scholars unanimously classify GTA as haram, citing its promotion of immorality and harm to spiritual and societal well-being.

PUBG and Way Forward

In conclusion, the position of PUBG in Islam is quite complex. The game provides entertainment and has gained massive popularity worldwide, attracting millions of players who enjoy its competitive and social aspects. On the other hand, it raises several important concerns for Muslims, especially regarding ethics, social behavior, and spiritual well-being. The game’s violent nature, where players engage in shooting and combat, can clash with Islamic teachings that emphasize peace and respect for life.

Even though the violence is not real. Another major concern is the potential for addiction. PUBG, like many other digital games, can be highly addictive, causing players to spend excessive amounts of time playing. This can lead to neglecting important religious duties such as daily prayers, reading the Quran, and other acts of worship. Islam encourages balance in life, ensuring that leisure activities do not interfere with one’s religious responsibilities or personal growth. However, with proper regulation, self-discipline, and a conscious effort to maintain balance, it is possible for Muslims to enjoy digital games like PUBG in a way that does not conflict with their faith.

The key lies in moderation, ensuring that gaming remains a form of leisure rather than a dominating force in a person’s life. As the digital gaming landscape continues to evolve, it is crucial for Muslim scholars, community leaders, and gamers themselves to engage in ongoing discussions about how best to reconcile modern entertainment with Islamic values.
